The Philadelphia Flyers are moving forward -- with as much positivity as possible -- amid the longest winless stretch in club history.
Ending that 13-game slide might not be easy against the Los Angeles Kings, who are off to a strong start on their longest road swing of the season.
Looking tokeep that winless streak from reaching 14 games, the reeling Flyers will try to prevent the visiting Kings from a second consecutive victory Saturday.
Still searching for its first win of 2022, Philadelphia has been outscored 51-26 during an 0-10-3 rut that followed a 3-2 victory at Seattle on Dec. 29. It's the Flyers second winless stretch of at least 10 games, and also has them mired in an 0-4-2 slide at home.
"We need to find a way to get a win," said Chuck Fletcher, the Flyers' president of hockey operations and general manager.
"We need to take the temperature down. ... My mindset is, now, there are going to be opportunities to get better. We have to take advantage of it. We can't undo what's been done."
It's uncertain what level of immediate improvement can help the Flyers turn this dismal season around. Perhaps not all hope is lost considering six of Philadelphia's past nine games have been decided by one goal.
Then again, the Flyers have managed 11 goals in those six 2022 home games.
Captain Claude Giroux remains Philadelphia's most worthy asset, though it remains to be seen if he's in the club's long-term plans. The team leader with 34 points, Giroux has four goals with an assist in the past five games, but he has been held without a point in three of four at home.
Giroux recorded two assists during the Flyers' 6-3 loss at Los Angeles on New Year's Day. Ex-King Martin Jones allowed five of those goals, and he is 0-4-1 with a 4.53 goals-against average this month. Philadelphia starter Carter Hart has a 3.02 GAA while stuck in an 0-6-2 starting rut.
Well in the mix for a playoff spot in the Western Conference, the Kings beat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Thursday to improve to 2-0-1 so far on their six-game trip. Each of those contests ended in the same score.
"I think our team does a good job of just staying in the moment," Kings coach Todd McLellan told the NHL's official website.
"When you're on the road for two weeks, it's a long time. But, when you put some points in the bank, you can enjoy the trip a little bit, at least.
"The most important game of the trip is the next one."
Cal Petersen has been in net for both Los Angeles' wins on the trip, and he is 5-1-0 with a 1.84 goals-against average this month. Teammate Jonathan Quick is 0-2-1 over his past three starts, but he made 34 saves in that victory over Philadelphia to open 2022.
Los Angeles' Viktor Arvidsson had two goals with two assists against Philadelphia this month, but he has just one point in the past four games. Teammate Trevor Moore recorded a goal with three assists in the same contest and has an assist in each of the past three games.
