SEATTLE, Washington: Further driving its efforts to dominate the healthcare market, Amazon.com has announced that it will offer its US prime members a $5 monthly subscription plan that will cover a range of generic drugs and their delivery to customers' homes.
In an interview with Reuters, Vin Gupta, Amazon Pharmacy's chief medical officer, said that the RxPass program will include over 50 medications for more that 80 chronic conditions, including high blood pressure, anxiety, diabetes and male pattern baldness.
However, the program will not be available to those enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid or any other government healthcare programs.
John Love, vice president of Amazon Pharmacy, said that the average Prime member would save about $100 per year with RxPass.
Amazon Prime members in most US states can sign up for the program, but the flat charge of $5 will not include insurance payments and will be in addition to the Prime membership fee, which costs $139 annually.
Amazon's ongoing focus on its healthcare portfolio now includes telehealth, drug deliveries, fitness trackers and cancer research, and its purchase of online pharmacy PillPack in 2018 enabled it to establish a prescription delivery and price-comparison site, making it a growing threat to pharmacy retailers CVS Health and Walgreens Boots.
"We believe a lot of Americans, particularly those that suffer from a chronic illness, are going to benefit from just Amazon's participation in pharmacy, the ability to get high-quality experience delivered to your door at low cost," Love said.
