DHAKA, Bangladesh - Sheikh Hasina has vowed to build a self-sufficient Bangladesh and has urged citizens not to be concerned about sanctions or visa restrictions imposed by foreign powers.

"It's pointless to worry about who will impose visa restrictions or sanctions on us," the prime minister said on Saturday at the inauguration of the Awami League's Dhaka District unit's newly built office in the Tejgaon industrial area.

"It doesn't matter if we don't take a 20-hour plane ride across the Atlantic to America. There are numerous other oceans and continents on the planet.

"We'll establish communication with them, befriend them; our economy will be stronger, more vigorous, and more developed," the Awami League president added.

She urged efforts to cultivate all arable land in order to increase production and prevent a global food shortage from affecting Bangladesh.

"We will build our country without relying on others."

The U.S. Biden administration imposed sanctions on Bangladesh's elite force, the Rapid Action Battalion.

The policy's goal was to deter security forces from abusing Bangladeshi citizens and to puncture the effects of "spin dictators," a term used to describe the silencing of critics at home while promoting an international campaign to highlight the economic growth and development potential.
